With layers, not barriers. Filtered screens (battens, hedging, wind-tolerant trees) slow a breeze where solid walls just throw it over the top. We position seating in the protected pockets and keep the view corridors open.

Hamilton is a hill with a view. From Hamilton Hill the suburb steps down to the flats around Racecourse Road and the Northshore riverfront, and nearly every garden brief opens the same way: don't lose the outlook. The houses (grand interwar homes, renovated Queenslanders, confident contemporary builds) occupy the slope precisely because of what it can see.

Designing on that slope is structural as much as horticultural. Levels, retaining, stairs, and drainage decide whether the garden works; planting and materials decide whether it feels effortless. We design the whole system, document it for engineers and builders, and can oversee construction so the details survive the build.

A garden in levels

Most Hamilton blocks fall metres from one boundary to the other; some fall a full storey. The design response is rarely one grand gesture: it's a sequence.
