Murraya is the hedge Brisbane reaches for when it wants a green wall in a hurry, and it delivers: dense glossy foliage, a naturally neat habit, and flushes of small white flowers that scent the entire garden after a summer downpour. Most people know it as murraya, though orange jessamine and mock orange point to the same plant and the same orange-blossom perfume.

It is genuinely one of the best screening plants for our climate, and it is also vigorous enough that we plant it with our eyes open, because the same speed that fills a boundary in a season or two will keep coming at you if you site it badly or let the trimming slide.

In a Brisbane garden

This plant loves our warmth and humidity, which is exactly why it performs so well here and exactly why it needs managing. Left alone in a good position a murraya hedge will put on real height quickly and reshoot fast after every trim, so we treat regular clipping as part of the deal rather than an optional extra, and we place it where that growth is a feature and not a fortnightly chore against the eaves or a path.

A couple of local realities are worth naming plainly. Murraya is a hungry feeder and its surface roots can compete with nearby planting and lift thin paving over time, so we keep it clear of slabs and give it its own run of bed. It can also seed into bushland from garden plantings, so on blocks that back onto a reserve we either keep it well clipped so it flowers less, or we steer the client toward a native screen instead.
