Sweet viburnum is one of the workhorse hedges of a Brisbane garden, and the named forms like 'Dense Fence' have made it even more useful. It is a fast, evergreen shrub with large, glossy dark-green leaves that clips into a solid green wall, screens a fence or a neighbour in a hurry, and asks very little of you in return. Where a fussier hedge sulks, viburnum just gets on with it.

Most people simply call it viburnum, though the genus is large and this is the sweet viburnum, Viburnum odoratissimum. The 'Dense Fence' selection is bred for exactly what the name promises: tighter, denser growth from the ground up, so you get a full screen without the bare ankles that plague some hedges. It is our default when someone wants privacy that looks after itself.

In a Brisbane garden

Viburnum is about as forgiving as a hedge gets here, which is why we specify it so often for privacy. It grows quickly through our warm, wet summers, holds its glossy leaf in full sun or part shade, and takes a hard clip without sulking, so it recovers fast if you let it get away over a busy few months. The 'Dense Fence' form keeps its foliage right down to the base, which is the difference between a screen and a row of bare stems with a green hat.

The honest note is that fast growth means real, if simple, maintenance: give it a clip once or twice through the growing season and it stays a tidy wall, skip it for a couple of years and you have a large, loose shrub to bring back into line. It wants reasonable drainage and a feed to look its lushest, and it will thin a little on a deeply shaded south side, where a shade-tolerant screen is the better call. Roots are well-behaved for a hedge of its size, so it sits comfortably along a boundary or a bed edge.
