Liriope muscari · Also known as Lily Turf, Giant Liriope
Liriope is the plant we reach for when a garden needs a crisp, low, evergreen line, along a path, around a tree, at the front of a bed, that will hold that line for years with barely a thought. Known as liriope, lily turf or giant liriope, it forms neat clumps of arching strap-like leaves and sends up little spikes of purple flower in the warmer months, and it is one of the true workhorses of a low-maintenance Brisbane garden.
Its great virtue is adaptability: it takes full sun or genuine shade, damp ground or dry, and keeps its tidy grassy tuft through all of it, which is exactly why we lean on it to do the quiet structural work that makes the rest of a planting look considered.
In a Brisbane garden
Liriope is close to unkillable in our conditions, holding a clean green tuft in deep dry shade under a tree, in a baking full-sun strip by the driveway, and in the damp ground either side, which is a genuinely rare span of tolerance and the reason it turns up in so many of our plans as the dependable edge. It clumps rather than runs, so a row of it stays exactly where you put it and slowly thickens into a solid ribbon rather than wandering across the bed.
The only maintenance worth naming is optional and annual: a hard shear of the whole planting in late winter clears any tired old foliage and lets the fresh growth come through clean, and after that the plant essentially disappears from the to-do list until the same time next year. Be sure to plant true clumping Liriope muscari rather than the running, grass-like relative sometimes sold cheaply, since the running kind is the one that spreads where it isn't wanted.

Massed as a border or edge, liriope gives the clean repeating line that a considered planting relies on, so it is a staple of our low-maintenance garden design and a recurring device in modern garden design, where a crisp band of strappy green against paving or gravel does a great deal with very little. We run it along paths, wrap it around specimen trees and use it to draw a firm line at the front of a bed.
Because it holds that tidy form in real shade, it is one of our most reliable answers for planting under a canopy, which is why it features so often in our thinking on shade gardens where lawn will not grow and bare soil looks unfinished. Underplanting a tree with a sweep of liriope turns an awkward dry-shade problem into a clean, green, permanent solution.
